Pupil D


Pupil D is a 4 year old male who has no diagnosis at the current time. Currently professionals have been working on developing functional communication skills through the use of Communication systems. Pupil D is ambulant and appears to understand much of the language around him and is working on making simple choices. Pupil D has been assessed as working within the level of P 1 to 3 and is currently working on Routes For Learning. Within his current IEP he is working on:
  • Route 30 Perseveres by repeating action for reward in social game
  • Communicates Choice
  • To work on PECs Phase 1 with adult prompting from behind which will gradually be withdrawn.

Baseline Results:

The student watched a number of still images and video clips which were recorded using the Tobii Gaze Viewer.

Video 1 ‘Frozen’ song video clip.

Pupil D enjoys listening to the music and watching my interaction. He makes a few fleeting glances at the screen which were not picked up by the heat and mapping points. He then watched some of the clip from the other side of the room and not positioned in front of the gaze viewer.

Video 2 ‘ROAR’ Katy Perry music video.

Pupil D attended immediately to video clip, the first heat spot appears before 1 second. At gaze plot 1 ,2 and 3 pupil D identifies the two faces in the clip, although the plots are slightly above the faces on the screen, this is due to pupil D standing up at this point.

At 9 seconds pupil D loses focus and moves away from the screen. The video clip is terminated at this point.

Video 3 Minions Song.

Pupil D Was unable to focus his attention on this clip. He did make fleeting glances at the screen but was not willing to sit in front of the gaze viewer so that a recording could be taken.

Video 4 Powerpoint of still images - faces.

Through out this recording pupil D changes his position so this has some effect on the gaze plots recorded.

However, Pupil D immediately looks at the screen and fixates on the facial features. At gaze point 2 he looks at the eyes and then looks at other facial features.

On slide 3 pupil D scans two of the faces in the image and also looks at some of the detail.

At gaze plot 10 to 15 pupil D focuses on the eyes and then at some of the detail on the hat. At this point pupil D attention is not on the screen.

Pupil D refocuses on the screen at 0.16 seconds. Gaze plots 16 to 22 show pupil D looking at the facial area and also looking at additional detail in the image.

Perhaps the best evidence collected from pupil D can be found on slide 10. Here pupil D fixates on the eyes and then looks from one eye to the other (gaze plots 23 to 28). Few gaze plots or heat spots were recorded after this slide.

Pupil D seems to show a preference to the still images and to familiar cartoon characters. He recognises facial features. In future sessions the use of pupil D’s work seat / station maybe required to limit the movement and ensure that the eye gaze can detect the eye movement.
